1 Timothy 4:12 - Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

If you were to diagram this sentence, "you" would be the subject of it. Paul was telling Timothy that he was the one who was responsible for how others viewed his leadership and authority.

First and Second Timothy are letters to Timothy, who Paul had sent to lead the church in Ephesus.

Paul had a great deal of love and respect for Timothy, and wanted Timothy to be successful and to remain faithful.

Paul knew, however, that Timothy’s young age might be a problem for some of the members of the Church at Ephesus.

Paul perceived that some of the believers may have taken issue with someone younger than themselves preaching to them.

Paul encouraged Timothy, by telling him not to let anyone despise him because he was young.  But to be an example…

Example -  Is "a pattern; a model; something to be copied or followed.

Timothy was the one anointed by God to carry on the work of the church at Ephesus, and he had to fight any cultural barriers that would cause the older people not to respect his authority because of his young age.

KEY POINT:  In 1 Tim. 4:12, Paul didn't write to the people at
Ephesus about not despising Timothy's youth; he wrote to Timothy about not letting others despise his youth.

Paul tells Timothy how to get others to respect his authority. It can all be summed up in the word "example."

As leaders, we have influence to a large degree on how others see us in the example that we set.   (Consider Numbers 13:30-33)

Paul told Timothy to lead by example.  Specifically, Paul wanted Timothy to set an example for the believers in Ephesus in five areas:

1. In Words

2. In Lifestyle
3. In Giving (As a Pastor you are not exempt from tithing)
4. In Spirit
5. In Faith
6. In Purity
